The year 2012 was a time of triumph and tragedy on the West Side, ranging from jobs lost at Patterson Vegetable Company and a fire that destroyed a condominium under construction on the north end of town to the hope of new beginnings, with the development of new businesses and schools. The following collection of photographs represents both momentous occasions and smaller portraits of everyday life. While they are not ranked by staff photographers and are not intended to serve as “top photos of the year,” they capture many of the joys and woes of life that made 2012 memorable here on the West Side.
