All that is left is the landscaping at the CalFire Del Puerto fire station at 2142 Sperry Rd. Renovations and new buildings have been underway for more than a year, including new barracks and living quarters with a kitchen for up to 10 firefighters and two officers, as well as new offices.

Firefighters are busy putting the final touches on the landscaping and racing the clock to get the job finished before seasonal rains begin, Battalion Chief Mike Jarske said.

The station contains three to four firefighters daily during the dry season, he said.

The station will be regularly staffed until at least November 18, he said, calling that date for staffing late due to the dry fall season so far.

The fire station is part of the Santa Clara Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection or CalFire. The Unit handles most wild land fires in Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, West San Joaquin and West Stanislaus Counties.

The Del Puerto Station also serves as the maintenance hub for the whole unit, serving more than 40 fire trucks.

CalFire is expecting to hold an open house to showcase the stations new renovation features in spring, Jarske said.
