Patterson community volunteer Juanzette Hunter was honored with the John V. Azevedo Volunteer of the Year Award by the Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce at its Lobsterfest fundraiser Saturday, Sept, 29.

Hunter, who was born in Alabama, settled to Patterson in the late 1980s and has a varied volunteer résumé.

She has been a member of Soroptimist International of Patterson since 2006, acting as vice president and then president for three years and serving on every committee in the local club.

She has volunteered at Sacred Heart Catholic School for 22 years and also volunteered at Patterson High School while her sons attended the school.

Hunter has been one of the coordinators for the Miss Patterson pageant for eight years, coached Redskins cheerleaders for more than five years and led the high school cheerleading squad for two years.

She is also among the volunteers who serve free meals in the city park each week.

As a chamber ambassador, Hunter talks to local business people about signing up as chamber members and helps host the chamber’s coffee hours.

She started a youth choir at her church, the Second Baptist Church in Modesto, where she has led the youth department for more than 14 years

She was also involved in foster care for 12 years.

Azevedo, 92, a retired U.S. Army colonel for whom the chamber’s volunteer award is named, was born Dec. 21, 1919, a day before voters in Patterson approved incorporating as a city. He enlisted in the Army two years after his 1939 graduation from Patterson High School.

Upon retiring from the military in 1966, Azevedo returned to Patterson and volunteered through the years with many organizations, including the Patterson Beautification Committee, City Council, Planning Commission and Patterson Township Historical Society.

During the Sept. 29 Lobsterfest, Denise Sperle, chamber president, presented proclamations from Sen. Anthony Cannella to past chamber board members and ambassadors, according to event chairwoman Vivian Ratliff.
