Community members, board members and volunteers for local charity Helping Others Sleep Tonight gathered in about a dozen tents on the lawn of the Federated Methodist-Presbyterian Church over the weekend for a 24-hour Camp Out Homelessness fundraiser.

The campout was intended to get the community thinking about homelessness and raise money to run HOST’s new permanent shelter, which is slated to open in a few months on South Fourth Street in Patterson.

The 24-hour fundraiser raised more than $6,000 through the sponsorship of group “camps” by local businesses and individuals. Food sales and donations also contributed to that total throughout the evening Friday, June 22, and into the afternoon Saturday, June 23.

Many participants, including families and young children, spent nearly the full 24 hours camped out at the corner of El Circulo and South Del Puerto Avenue, where their tents were clearly visible to passers-by on the street.
