What a shock to open the Sunday edition of the Modesto Bee and see and read about a member of our Patterson community. A newly elected City Council member garnered front- and back-page coverage. No one deserves to be the victim of domestic abuse. Everyone will agree about that issue.
The rest of the story was shocking as well. How do we excuse blatant lying? There is a reason certain questions are asked of candidates when they are running for public office. Citizens use this information to choose the candidate they feel is most qualified to fill the position. Lying on questionnaires and forms filed when running for office is inexcusable. City Council members make major financial decisions for our community.
Sheree Lustgarten says it was her ex-husband’s fault for her bankruptcies and foreclosures. Saying that those are excused after a certain time limit does not mean it is OK to not disclose the information. Honesty is a character trait. Most people base their votes on a candidate’s character.
This was a very close race. How many people would have voted for Sheree if all this had come out before the election? I imagine that is why this information was hidden. She should resign.
