The Patterson High cross country team received a dose of perspective before competing at the Sac-Joaquin Section’s subsection meet Saturday, Nov. 7. A handful of runners — hampered by illness and schedule conflicts — would not make the trip to Angels Camp to participate in one of the final races of the season.
So even though the Tigers didn’t run their best race, they were less concerned about leaving some points on the course than they were about keeping their season alive.
“We did run fairly well,” Patterson coach Dave Klein said. “But we either moved our No. 1, 2 and 3 runners to the 2-mile race, or they were sick or participated (at a school band function).”
Klein’s decision to run his athletes in the 2-mile events paid off.
The Patterson frosh-soph girls team placed third with 119 points, qualifying eight runners for the section meet Saturday, Nov. 14, in Folsom. Del Oro of Loomis (41) placed first at the subsection meet, while St. Mary’s of Stockton (119) finished tied with Patterson but took second on a tiebreaker, the time of each team’s sixth runner.
Meghan Wraa set the pace for Patterson with a 10th-place finish and a time of 15 minutes, 25 seconds. Teammates Maritza Vega (15:26), Marisabel Carrillo (15:36), Laura Thompson (16:48) and Shalini Bakshi (16:51) also ran well at the event.
“We wanted to compete with the top schools in the 2-mile, and we did,” Klein said. “For the most part, all of the girls ran a solid race.”
Patterson’s Sarah Cote (16:54), Sandy Luo (18:02) and Elsa Miranda (21:22) also qualified to race in Folsom.
The Patterson sophomore boys will also compete at the section meet, thanks to a fifth-place finish against a tough field in Angels Camp.
El Dorado of Placerville captured first place with 51 points. Union Mine of El Dorado (56) and Sierra of Manteca (74) placed second and third, respectively.
Tyler Walker led Patterson with a 13th-place finish in a time of 12:35. Teammates Roberto Sanchez (12:50), Ben Vega (13:55), Chris Teran (14:37) and Edgar Malagon (14:37) also fared well.
While Patterson did not qualify any of its runners for the section meet in the 3.1-mile varsity race, a small contingent did participate in the event.
The boys were piloted by Rafael Martinez (20:14) and A.J. Walker (20:23). The girls were directed by Taryn Hale (23:06) and Danielle McWilliams (24:19).
“We still have some work to do if we want to challenge at sections,” Klein said. “We’ll practice as we’ve done all season and hope for the best.”
