Local poet will read works

DETAILS: Longtime Patterson resident Nancee Kinkaid Maya is reading her own work at the presentation of “Song of the San Joaquin” readings on Saturday, Nov.2. Poets from the Central Valley, Bay Area and Sacramento will read their own work at this event presented by Poets of the San Joaquin and the Stanislaus County Library and Friends of the Library. Light refreshments are provided. An open mike will follow the formal presentation.

Free flu shot clinic scheduled

WHEN: 12 Noon to 8 p.m.

WHERE: Emanuel Family Practice, 1010 W. Las Palmas Ave., Suite E, in the True Value Hardware shopping center.

DETAILS: Emanuel Family Practice will be offering a free flu shot clinic on Thursday, Nov. 7 to local residents. The free flu shot clinic is for adults 18 and older only and can accommodate the first 300 adults. Dr. Shelle Glover will be available to meet with patients and answer questions. In addition, refreshments will be served.

Saturday, Nov. 9

Musicians take part in concert

WHEN: 3 p.m.

WHERE: Gallo Center for the Arts, 100 I St.

DETAILS: Two 12-year-old Creekside Middle School students Ashley Jepson and Xandra Carter will be among the musicians playing in the Modesto Symphony Orchestra Opening Season Concert on Saturday, Nov. 9. Ashley, a seventh-grader, is a violin student and Xandra, and eighth-grader, is a bass player, both taught by Susan Ingram.

Celebrating its 37th season, Ryan Murray, symphony music director, and the youth will present works by Verdi, Handel and Williams, among others.

COST: $10 adults and $5 youth

Cash Tribute featuring James Garner

WHEN: Doors open at 7 p.m. and show begins at 8 p.m.

WHERE: Westside Theatre, 1331 Main St., Newman

DETAILS: The Cash Tribute show featuring James Garner celebrates the life and music of Johnny Cash also known as The Man in Black. Garner and his band also incorporate historical accounts and personal stories about Cash.

COST: $19 general admission and $22 reserved section. Students admitted for half price

A taste of Norway

Saturday, Nov. 16

WHEN: Doors open at 3 p.m. and dinner is served at 3:30 p.m.

WHERE: Turlock Senior Center, 1191 Cahill, Turlock

DETAILS: Sons of Norway Garborg Lodge 6-56 of Modesto, will host its annual lutefisk, torsk and meatball dinner. The Village Dancers, and Tim Rude and his Hardanger Fiddle will present entertainment. Dessert will be assorted Norwegian cookies and lefse. A donation drawing is planned and there will be plenty of time to socialize.

COST: Tickets are $18 for adults before Nov. 10 and $20 for adults there after and at the door. Children’s ti9ckets are $6 each.
