Decade of Oktoberfest celebrated
Sacred Heart Catholic School Parent Association will serve up a variety of beer, cheese and sausage samples Saturday, Oct. 13, during Oktoberfest, continuing a decade-long fundraiser.
After Sacred Heart Principal Jason Oliveira attended a Gustine Rotary Club fundraiser called “Hops and Bangers” in Gustine more than a decade ago, he decided the elementary school parent association should host an Oktoberfest.
Saturday’s event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Bonaventure Hall, 505 M St., and is open only to adults age 21 and older.
During the past 10 years, the school has welcomed 350 to 400 people annually to the fundraising event. This year’s celebration includes samplings from Gustine-based Wolfsen’s Meat and Sausage, as well as wine, beer and cheese samplings.
“Something new this year is we’ll have fried cheese at the event,” Oliveira said. “For this event, we also have had different sponsorship levels, and the community has been very supportive of the school and the Oktoberfest.”
Besides plenty of food to eat, donation drawings are on the evening’s agenda. A silent auction will feature themed baskets assembled by each class at the school, sports memorabilia and Oktoberfest wall décor.
Most of the money raised Saturday will go toward the school’s immediate needs.
The proceeds of a drawing for a Chevy Corvette or a Ford Mustang will go into a fund to build a multipurpose room for the school.
