Drunk driver causes power outage

On Saturday, Feb. 15, a power outage affecting thousands of community members began at 4:23 a.m., troubling businesses, street light signals and residential homes northwest of Patterson’s downtown district.

According to Turlock Irrigation District spokesman Calvin Curtin, the outage was caused by a car running into a switch box on the corner of Calvinson Parkway and Reflections Avenue just east of Baldwin Road.

Chief Tori Hughes of Patterson Police Services acknowledged that the crash was due to a drunk driving incident. The driver, Ryan Goodwin of Patterson, was arrested that morning after crashing his green Toyota Tacoma into the switchbox, said Hughes.

Curtin acknowledged that most customers in the region saw their power restored by 6:59 p.m., although some residents suggested that they received their power as early as 9 a.m.

Curtin said the most affected areas in town were west Patterson, south of Sperry Avenue between Baldwin Road and S. Del Puerto Avenue, as well as 9th Street between Ward and Sperry avenues and South 6th, 7th and 8th streets. At 5:45 a.m., a larger area south of Sperry and east of Baldwin lost power due to emergency switching, but by 11:46 a.m., the outage area was isolated to an area south of Sperry between Baldwin and American Eagle Avenue.

One troubleshooter was initially dispatched to assess and isolate the trouble location, said Curtain. Once TID determined the issue, a line crew consisting of six TID personnel were dispatched to repair the pad mount switch.

Curtin said TID received a large wave of calls all throughout the day and could hardly handle the amount of call necessary to reach every customer without an ample wait time.

“Unfortunately, during larger outages, TID’s customer service department can be overwhelmed with phone calls as happened on Saturday,” said Curtin. “TID takes every electrical outage very seriously and always strives to provide the best customer experience possible. To help provide up to date information to our customers, we place a prerecorded message describing the outage and estimated time of repair on our service line prior to a representative answering the call. TID customers can always find the latest information regarding outages in their area by visiting their website at http://www.tid.org/power/outages.”

 TID also recommends that if a customer is without power longer than 5 minutes, it is recommended that, prior to calling; you cautiously locate your electrical service panel and check to see if the main circuit breaker has flipped to the “off” or “trip” position. If your power is not restored after you have reset the circuit breaker, call 883-8301.
