A season of championships and milestones was punctuated by Patterson High’s fall sports banquet last week.

Athletes were recognized Nov. 18 in four sports — cross country, boys soccer, girls golf and volleyball — and many celebrated milestones or new beginnings this year.

“We had a lot of great memories,” boys soccer coach Greg Hartsell told the crowd gathered inside the Patterson High School cafeteria.

He said winning the section championship for the first time in his tenure was something he’ll never forget.

Hartsell presided over Patterson’s 20-5-4 season as the Tigers won the Western Athletic Conference and the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V title game. On Wednesday, he recognized Rodrigo Aldana as the team’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player, while senior goalkeeper Luis Torres was named the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Senior Javier Gonzalez came away with the team’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. Teammate Rafa Sotello was honored as Most Improved Player, and Eduardo Lopez received the Coach’s Award.

Torres, Aldana, Gonzalez, Cesar Molina, Gustavo Molina and Danny Virgen earned spots on the WAC’s All-League first team, and Torres and Molina were named team captains.

Cross country coach Dave Klein acknowledged his league-champion girls team, which took home a second consecutive WAC title.

Klein recognized Marisabel Carrillo as the team’s Most Outstanding Runner. The Tiger Pride Runner award went to Laura Thompson.

Most Improved Runner honors went to Laura Vazquez; the Most Valuable Teammate award went to Raphael Martinez; and the Coach’s Awards went to Edgar Malagon and Meghan Wraa.

Carrillo, Wraa and Maritza Vega earned spots on the WAC’s All-League first team. Carrillo, Vega and Martinez were named team captains.

Girls golf coach Jason Oliveira oversaw an inexperienced team that managed a 7-9 record in the Valley Foothill League South and qualified two golfers for section tournament appearances.

He especially bestowed praise on the team’s captains, Izabella Cruz and Alex Delguidice. Cruz also received the Most Outstanding Golfer award, while Delguidice garnered the MVP award.

“You brought things to our program that can’t be replaced,” Oliveira told Delguidice, a senior. “I put a lot of value on the leadership you provided.”

Oliveira handed newcomers Sarah Marty and Kelsey Allen his Coach’s Awards.

Volleyball coach Jennifer Hamm recognized four players: Hailey Hohl won the Tiger Pride Award, while Stephanie Cantu’s play earned her the Tiger Hustle Award.

“Each of these players came out ready to work,” Hamm said. “They showed enthusiasm. We had a lot of fun and lots of laughs.”

Hamm also recognized Chelsea Perez as the team’s Most Improved Player. The MVP award went to Dani Hansen, and seniors Amber Bond and Christine Bays were designated captains.

Junior varsity and freshmen

The Patterson High JV fall athletics season was also capped by last week’s banquet.

JV volleyball coach Judy Dodd named Caitlyn Tanner the team’s MVP. Tanner and Deyanira Guerrero were deemed co-captains, and Mafileo Paletua came away with the Tiger Pride award.

Freshman coach Tarah McComak named Sarah Carranza her team’s captain. Gloria Guerrero took Tiger Pride honors.

Patterson JV boys soccer coach Alfredo Virgen named Edgar Murillo the team’s Outstanding Offensive Player. Emmanuel Sotello earned the Outstanding Defensive Player award. Teammates Garrett Funston, Adrian Ramirez and Chris Teran were co-captains, and Jose Guerrero took home the Most Improved Player award.
