Freedom to celebrate

On Saturday, Sept. 15, I was asked to participate in the “Fiestas Patrias” as the grand marshal. Mrs. Linda Meza and the group of current and former students asked for my participation, and I was truly honored by their request.

As I heard “The Star-Spangled Banner” sung by Briana Meza and the Mexican national anthem sung by Eliana Cortez, I could not help but think of the strong common thread that we share with our fellow Americans. We all have a strong love of freedom for all, not just the chosen few. It was the love of that liberty that was at the case of this wonderful celebration of Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule. The beauty of it for those of us who belong in two cultures is that we can freely celebrate both in this great country founded on the premise of liberty and justice for everyone.

A special thanks to Mrs. Meza, her family and friends for this great celebration of freedom.
