Henry “Sonny” Kempton Jr.

June 3 1950 — July 24, 2013

Henry “Sonny” Kempton, Jr., 63, died from heart disease on Wednesday, July 24 at home in Patterson. He was born June 3, 1950 to Adeline and Henry Kempton, Sr. in Alameda.

Mr. Kempton married Janet Kempton on July 28, 1972 and they were together for 24 years. They had two children, Jennifer and Edward. The family lived in Oakdale and moved to Susanville when the children started school.

Mr. Kempton loved anything to do with nature. He took his family camping every weekend; taught his children to fish and hunt and took them on long hikes in the woods. He enjoyed old John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies, gardening and taking long walks with the family dog after work each evening.

He spent most of his working life as a truck driver, a job that pleased him, and retired at age 60 to move in with his mother to help around the house. He grew a garden and landscaped around the place.

His father preceded Mr. Kempton in death. He is survived by his children, Jennifer Kempton and Edward Kempton; his ex-wife, Janet; mother, Adeline; sisters, Joyce Cutler and Ruth Avilla and their families; as well as nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed.

Mr. Kempton was cremated at the Oakdale-Riverbank Memorial Chapel in Oakdale and will be scattered in the mountains by his son. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made to Wilderness Unlimited, 22425 Meekland Ave., Hayward, CA 94541.
