Seven Patterson High junior varsity wrestlers placed in the top three in their weight classes Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Mel Focha Invitational at Escalon High School.

Patterson freshman Tony Halcon made his mark in the 120-pound weight class, notching a first-place finish at the 22-team event.

Patterson coach Lee Scoles said the Tigers “did very well.”

“We’re still teaching these kids to wrestle aggressively, but they are showing real improvements in technical skills,” Scoles said. “We’ll take some things from this match. There are areas that we can still improve on.”

Jose Jaramillo, a Patterson sophomore, earned a second-place finish in the 120-pound weight class, and fellow sophomore Chris Perez took second at 126.

“(Jaramillo) gave away eight pounds to his opponent, but he wrestled hard, and did a good job,” Scoles said. “(Perez) showed lots of desire to win against taller, more muscular opponents. Good things are starting to come for these kids.”

First-year wrestler Jorge Canales, a senior, took third overall at 120 pounds. Freshman Ethan Schut (132 pounds) also placed third for Patterson.

In the girls division, Patterson junior Shaunice Murphy took second in the 140-pound weight class and senior Priscilla Hackley placed third at 160.

The Tigers will compete again Friday, Jan. 11, during the Lloyd C. Engel Tournament at Escalon High.

Central Valley 43, Patterson 32

Patterson High’s varsity wrestling team lost its Western Athletic Conference dual meet with host Central Valley High of Ceres on Thursday, Jan. 3.

Scoles didn’t mince words about his team’s performance.

“There were several individuals who made mental mistakes and came out flat,” Scoles said. “Some of the experienced kids should have come out on top (in their matches). We cannot afford to give up points.”

Central Valley pulled away early with wins in six of the first seven matches. Still, a pin by sophomore Eloa Chadwick in the 170-pound bout put Patterson (2-2 overall, 1-1 WAC) back in contention.

Despite big matches that followed — including a pin by freshman Sean DeCampo at 106, a pin by sophomore Daniel Cota at 126 and a pin by Dylan Christiansen, another sophomore, at 132 — the Tigers lost to Livingston.

Junior Manuel Cruz (138) pulled out a 6-4 decision for Patterson. Senior Joey Howard pulled off a major-decision victory in the 145-pound match.

“It’s about repetition at practice. It’s about eliminating fear and self-doubt,” Scoles said. “It’s about being a better team at the end of the season than we were at the start.”

Junior varsity: Patterson 58, Central Valley 15

The JV Tigers won five matches by pin and four by decision.

Schut (132) pinned Alex Alvarado, Keith Gordon (138) pinned Logan Dowling, Brad Gill (170) pinned Reshem Dosanih, Francisco Plascencia (195) pinned Jason Beckhart and Anthony Lucero (220) pinned David Carrillo.

Zeke Miranda scored a major decision over Alvaro Rodriguez in the 160-pound weight class.

Mitchell Matthew beat Ricardo Briseno at 106, Jaramillo bested Lexie Cordova at 120 and Halcon topped Malynda Lomeli at 126.
