Retired physician Pete LaTorre is the new president of the Friends of the Patterson Library. He has taken over the position from Grace McCord, who led the group last year.

Other board members for 2014 are Danielle Mirilez, vice president; Judy Mullins, secretary; Sue Henderson, treasurer; Trudy DeGroot, book sale chairwoman and Kay Swift, historian.

LaTorre retired from his medical practice in January 2008, but continues to remain just as active in the community as he had for the last 40 years.

Some community organizations that have benefited from his works are Patterson Lions Club, Patterson Recognizing Individuals Determined to Excel scholarship group and the Patterson Centennial Committee. He is also a vigorous participant at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

LaTorre will now oversee the Friends of the Patterson Library’s 24 life members, who have paid the one-time fee of $100, 40 supporting members and 21 active members — both categories of members have paid an annual $10 fee.

The organization made $2,200 in 2013 due to their various fundraisers, including 56 percent of the money coming from the book sales, 24 percent from memberships, 15 percent from Save Mart Shares Cards and 5 percent from memorial donations.

The Friends of the Patterson Library have two used book sales a year — one in mid-October and the other in mid-April — where local library patrons can buy new and gently used books for a minor fee.

The money raised by the local club goes back to the library for the $350 necessary to create the Day of the Child Celebration, the $300 in funds for non-fiction books, children’s books and holiday books and the $121 for annual magazine subscriptions.

The library friends meet the second Monday of each month at the library — new members are always welcome.
