Several Patterson High runners ran their fastest races yet Oct. 17 in Livingston, but that was not enough for victory in the Tigers’ Western Athletic Conference dual meet against the Livingston High Wolves.

The undefeated Wolves won both the boys and the girls varsity meets.

“It was not that we ran badly. It was just that Livingston ran that good,” said Patterson coach Dave Klein. “We could very well have run against a potential section-winning team.”

Led by a first-place finish by Sergio Garcia, the Livingston boys team had five of the six fastest runners and handed Patterson (4-2 WAC) only its second league dual-meet loss of the season.

Livingston (6-0) upended Patterson’s contingent 19-42 to take a firm hold of the league’s top spot.

While three Patterson runners finished in the top 10, Nathan Stanton and Roberto Sanchez were the only two to break into the top seven in the 3.1-mile race.

Stanton placed second in 16 minutes, 13 seconds, just behind Garcia (15:54). Sanchez took seventh place, finishing with a time of 17:59.

Patterson’s Ben Vega crossed the line in 10th place with a time of 18:27, and Antonio Venegas earned 11th place with an 18:30 finish.

On the girls side, Lupe Ventura of Patterson High took first place in 20:48, but the host team claimed the next seven spots in the 3.1-mile race to come away with a 14-43 victory.

“We actually ran personal-best times with our top six runners,” Klein said. “It was just not good enough against a strong Livingston team.”

Patterson’s Jenevy Esqueda claimed a ninth-place finish with a time of 24:29, and her sister Stephanie Esqueda finished 10th in 24:58.

Gracie Bradley (25:01, 11th) and Carina Sotelo (26:57, 12th) also ran well for the Tigers.

“Livingston has a solid varsity program,” Klein said. “They’ll be tough to beat at the league championships.”

The Tigers concluded their league season Wednesday, Oct. 24, when they competed in the WAC championships at River Bluff Regional Park in Ceres.

Results of the event were not available at press time.

Junior varsity

Patterson’s JV boys team edged Livingston to finish the WAC dual meet season undefeated.

The Tigers (6-0) had four of the top six finishers in the two-mile race for a 27-30 win.

“Our top five finishers all ran personal bests,” Klein said.

Patterson’s Devin Burnett (11:51) finished first. Dylan Halland (12:15) and Carlos Ponce (12:19) placed third and fifth.

Dylan Christiansen (12:30, sixth) and Daniel Isquierdo (14:55, 12th) also recorded solid times for the Tigers.
