After qualifying for the postseason for the first time in ten years, the Patterson High volleyball team's solid season ended with a loss in the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs at Oakdale High School.

Patterson fell to the Oakdale Mustangs, 25-8, 25-18, 25-7 on Nov. 12, concluding the Tigers' most successful season in recent memory.

According to second-year coach Tarah High, it's the first time Patterson (8-4 Western Athletic Conference) has made it to the section tournament in a decade.

"It was a really great season," High said. "We played aggressive, we played smart. Our skills came around at the right time."

Senior Dayna Hansen led with four kills, three blocks and three digs in Patterson's final match, while senior Kiara Job put up two kills, and two blocks, and junior Cassie Santelices tallied seven digs and three assists.

Senior Riquel Benitez had seven digs, while classmate Mele Tupouata and sophomore Esther Ekwueme registered two blocks apiece for the Tigers.

As the class of 2014 graduates, next year’s volleyball squad will consist of underclassmen — a few with a year of varsity experience under their belt. They have set high expectations for the upcoming campaign, High said.

"I think that the volleyball program is looking good," High said. "Our freshman coach Nancy Sill and our junior varsity coach Salina Williams are doing a good job of training and improving the skill level of our program."
