The Tigers (9-1 overall, 1-1 Western Athletic Conference) also saw their modest two-match unbeaten streak against Central Valley come to an end as the Hawks (12-1, 2-0) extended their own winning streak Thursday to eight games.
In 2012, Patterson finished the regular season tied for first place in the conference standings with Central Valley, but it held the tiebreaker advantage in Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoff seeding because of its 1-0-1 record against the Hawks.
Paced by three goals from senior Omar Orozco and one from junior Jose Martin, the Hawks midfield was all over the pitch Thursday at Patterson Community Stadium, setting up attackers and creating opportunities for themselves.
After several early runs, pushing the ball up the field and challenging Patterson's goalkeeper, Central Valley found the back of the net with a strike by Martin in the 12th minute.
On the attack less than six minutes later, Orozco punched the ball into the right side of the net to make it 2-0.
In the 20th minute of the first half, after outracing the home team's defense to a loose ball in the Patterson end, Orozco made a sharp cut into the penalty area and immediately fired a right-footed shot that beat the Tigers' keeper to the far post.
Patterson found the back of the net in the 22nd minute, however.
Dribbling through the Hawks' defense with an with array of intricate spin moves, jukes and fakes, Patterson junior Andres Herrera sent a rolling shot on goal that got past Central Valley's keeper, and made it 3-1.
With Orozco sidelined after being taken out on a yellow card-drawing foul five minutes later, the Tigers again mustered offense through a rigid Hawks’ defense.
Patterson senior Ricardo Alcateur converted a rebound chance following a free kick in the 14th minute, and cut the deficit to 3-2 going into the intermission.
The Hawks quickly quelled any momentum the Tigers gained, however, by scoring a goal of their own less than three minutes into the second half.
Orozco continued the scoring for the Hawks, when he received a return pass and fired a shot over Patterson's net-minder from the left side to provide the final margin of victory.
The Tigers will continue their season at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, when they travel to face Los Banos High.
The JV Tigers (0-2 WAC) fell to Central Valley 5-0 in a league match at Patterson Community Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 19.
