Before the start of the season, Patterson High cross country coach Joe Aguilar figured the current contingent of boys runners provided the Tigers a strong chance to contend for the Western Athletic Conference championship.

The campaign is proving his hunch accurate, as the Patterson boys fended off a tough Livingston High team on their way to a 26-29 win at the T.W. Patterson Sports Park on Oct. 23.

The triumph marked the first time since 1994 that the Patterson boys team (6-0 WAC) finished a league season undefeated.

"Everybody did what they had to do, and we pushed each other," Aguilar said. "The kids do their best each race, and that's all that we ask for."

Patterson’s Nathan Stanton, unbeaten in WAC competition, completed the 3.1-mile course first, with a time of 17 minutes, 20 seconds.

Patterson had five of the top 10 runners in Antonio Venegas, Steven Halseth, Tomas Virgen and Dylan Halland.

Venegas clocked in with a second-place finish in 17:49. Halseth's time of 18:30 was good for fifth place. Virgen (eighth) and Halland (10th) finished in 19:13 and 19:26, respectively.

On the girls side, Patterson’s Lupe Ventura continued her undefeated league season, taking first place in 21 minutes, while teammate Brenda Vargas finished fifth in 23:09. But behind a solid outing from its top runners, Livingston was able to come away with a 22-34 victory.

The Wolves took six of the top eight spots in the 3.1-mile race.

Patterson’s Jenevy Esqueda claimed a ninth-place finish with a time of 24:06. Teammates Alejandra Carrasco (10th, 24:29) and Stephanie Esqueda (11th, 25:16) chimed in with respectable finishes.

In the 2-mile junior varsity boys race, Livingston earned a win by forfeit. Patterson did not field a complete JV boys team for the event.

Sean Hicks paced the Tigers (5-1 WAC) in the race, claiming a first-place finish with a time of 12:57. Arturo Navarro (third, 13:46), Daniel Isquierdo (fifth, 14:12) and Angel Ceja (15th, 18:14) rounded out the top Patterson finishers.

Patterson's JV girls did not have enough runners for a team score, however, Xylana Gama placed first (16:26) on the 2-mile course.
