Patterson makes progress in pool

A handful of Patterson High swimmers are turning heads despite team losses on the road to Western Athletic Conference opponent Los Banos High on Friday, April 12.

The boys team (2-3 WAC) lost 138-129 and the girls team (2-3) fell 134-101, but Patterson coach Amy Castillo said the Tigers are benefiting as individuals from tough workouts during team practices.

“The men and women on this team continue to improve,” Castillo said. “I am very proud of their effort and their growth.”

Patterson continues the WAC season at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Pacheco High of Los Banos.


Matthew Schaa shaved three seconds off his previous best time in the boys 500-yard freestyle, finishing in first place against Los Banos in 5 minutes, 57.71 seconds.

Nick Molieri clipped 16 seconds off his best 500 freestyle time to finish third (7:41.59).

Michael D’Onofrio turned in a winning time of 2:13.92 in the 200 individual medley. The time qualifies D’Onofrio to swim in the varsity boys division at the Sac-Joaquin Section meet May 9 to 11 at Tokay High in Lodi.

Swimmers can qualify for the section meet throughout the regular season by meeting the designated time standard for an event. For the boys 200 individual medley, the standard is 2:15.

D’Onofrio also placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.12) and paced the boys 200 medley relay team to a second-place finish (1:54.05). Completing the relay team were Aaron Gonzales, Austin Johnson and Schaa.

Caden Johnson placed first in the boys 200 freestyle with a time of 2:37.67.

In the boys 100 freestyle, James Johnson claimed first place in 55.25 seconds.

Austin Johnson took second in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 1:06.82.

Steven Halseth, Austin Johnson, Gonzales and D’Onofrio also finished first in the boys 200 freestyle relay in 1:41.90.


Nohemi Morales posted a personal-best time of 30.61 seconds in the girls 50 freestyle.

Lizvette Villafana shaved three seconds off her best 500 freestyle time (7:46.39), and improved on her top 200 freestyle time (2:51.56) to finish third .

In the girls 200 medley relay, Jenevy Esqueda, Lauren Cabonce, Alejandra Munoz and Danica Cook placed third with a time of 2:41.36.
