The match was the league opener for both squads, and after a few shaky first serves, Patterson took firm control of the contest by nearly sweeping singles play in all six matches .
“During the match against Livingston, we slowly picked up after a rough start and pulled out a win,” said Patterson coach Raustand Nzoule. “I believe we can take on other teams in our league, if we can simply play with confidence.”
Patterson won five of the six singles matches against Livingston to seize momentum.
Tigers’ No. 2 singles player Kendal Norfleet batted down Livingston’s Karina Cruz, 6-2, 6-2.
In No. 3 singles, Elena Rodriguez shined in a 6-3, 7-5, win over the Wolves’ Silvia Pulido. Patterson’s No. 4 singles player Nzuzi Mahungu bested Marisol Naranjo, 7-6, 6-2 while the No. 5 singles, Chanda Noynola earned a 7-5, 6-2, triumph over Tyler Metcalf.
Patterson’s Jennifer Camberos picked up the victory at No. 6 singles, topping Cynthia Frias-Ocampo, 6-1, 6-0.
Patterson’s No. 1 singles player, Kelby Norfleet, was defeated by Livingston’s Kimberly Gomez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
The Tigers also landed three victories in doubles play.
Patterson’s No. 1 tandem of Lauren Cabonce and Victoria Paden defeated the Wolves’ Yajaira Barragon and Marbella Mascorro, 7-5, 6-2, and the Tigers’ No. 2 doubles team of Sandy Luo and Avree Chairez took care of Livingston’s Karina Ramos and Jennifer Garcia, 6-1, 6-0.
The Tigers’ No. 3 pairing of Francheska Olvera and Britnei Murray earned a win over Livingston’s Maggie Mendoza and Maria Vera, 6-3, 6-2.
Central Valley 5, Patterson 4
Central Valley High of Ceres eked past Patterson on Thursday, Sept. 6, with a 5-4 victory against the visiting Tigers.
Mahungu earned a No. 4 singles victory over Central Valley’s Julie Avila in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Noynola followed with a win at No. 5 singles, dispatching Emely Emaya, 6-1, 6-4. In No. 6 singles, Camberos won 6-3, 6-0 against Ana Arellano.
The Tigers’ sole doubles win was in the No. 2 spot, as Luo and Chairez defeated Virdiana Gomez and Marcela Sanchez in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
