On a rough, mounded course conductive to testing even the most experienced runners' times, the Patterson High cross country team lived up to its billing as the likely challenger to perennial league frontrunner Livingston High.

The Tigers ran away with the top times in both the boys and girls 3.1-mile races during a Western Athletic Conference tri-meet with Central Catholic High of Modesto and Pacheco High of Los Banos Oct. 9 at T.W. Patterson Sports Park. Patterson also won the boys and girls team scores.

The Patterson boys team (4-0 WAC) defeated the Central Catholic Raiders 15-49 and the Pacheco Panthers 21-40.

Boosting his 2013 meet record to 7-0, Tiger Nathan Stanton won the boys race with a time of 16 minutes, 51 seconds. He was followed by teammate Antonio Venegas (17:57) in second.

Patterson's Dylan Halland and Steven Halseth were fifth in the boys trek in 19:18, followed by teammate Tomas Virgen with a time of 19:24. Carlos Ponce took eighth in 19:47, and Jose Jaramillo (10th) rounded out the boys squad with a time of 20:21.

The Patterson varsity girls (3-1 WAC) topped Central Catholic 17-44 and Pacheco 20-39.

Patterson's Lupe Ventura remains undefeated on the league season, racing to a time of 20:23, which placed her first at last week's three-way competition.

Brenda Vargas (third) had the next best time for Patterson at 23:03, followed by Jenevy Esqueda’s fourth-place time of 19:42.

Rounding out Patterson’s girls team was Stephanie Esqueda (sixth) in 24:25, Alejandra Carrasco (eighth) in 24:55, Mishelle Martinez (12th) in 26:39, Carina Sotelo (13th) in 26:40 and Eriah Lano (14th) at 26:41.

Patterson's junior varsity boys had five of the top six runners in the 2-mile jaunt, including Sean Hicks in first at 12:46, as the Tigers coasted past Pacheco. Central Catholic was unable to field a complete squad and was forced to forfeit the WAC race to Patterson (4-0).

Close behind Hicks for the Tigers were Arturo Navarro (13:17) in second, Daniel Isquierdo (13:44) in fourth, John McCord (13:55) in fifth and Angel Ceja (17:31) in sixth.

Patterson's junior varsity girls did not have enough runners for a team score, however, Xylona Gama timed 15:07 over the 2-mile course. Teammate Lanaeya Banks traversed the course in 17:14.

Patterson will continue its season at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, when it hosts the Livingston Wolves.
