25 years ago — June 2, 1988

Vincent Rucobo, currently principal of Oak Ridge High School, will succeed Richard Day as principal of Patterson High.

Carolyn Caporgno has received three prestigious awards from the Central Valley Camp Fire Council. It is the first time one recipient has received triple honors.

Apricot Fiesta chair Chris Bingham reports that out-of-town interest in this year’s celebration, plus Patterson’s growing population, make for a record turnout.

50 years ago — June 6, 1963

High school trustees, noting that nothing would be gained, have included their district in the Modesto Junior College study.

Steve Hall will soon leave for Istanbul, Turkey, for a summer under the AFS program.

The American Legion will hold its annual chicken barbecue this Saturday with John Reis and Homer Brewer doing the cooking.

75 years ago — June 10, 1938

Secretary T.J. Moe of the Del Puerto Cemetery Association has mailed out 800 questionnaires, asking local families their opinions on forming a cemetery district that would collect a small tax to maintain the local grounds.

Stanley Cox of Westley has been elected president of the Men’s Association at Modesto Junior College.

A range rider for a Westley ranching operation was twice arrested early this week for riding a horse while intoxicated and endangering others. He paid a $10 fine after the first arrest, but was ordered to serve 90 days in jail after the second.

The local American Legion post this week backed a proposal to construct an additional veterans’ hospital for the valley in Del Puerto Canyon.

100 years ago — June 7, 1913

After PG&E electric power went off Friday night, a large gas engine was quickly borrowed from the Charles Zacharias Ranch to pump water to Patterson residents.

The Southern Pacific will soon begin excursion runs from the West Side to the Bay Area, the round-trip rate from Patterson being $3.75

A second drug store in downtown Patterson is expected to open June 15 in the Leverton Building on North Third Street. It will include a soda fountain and ice cream parlor.

The faculty of Patterson’s new high school has been selected, and classes will begin in the fall at the grammar school. Professor W.J. Connell will serve as principal, assisted by teachers Alice Fowler of Paso Robles and Hollace Shaw of Berkeley. Trustee Dr. A.M. Field explained that some people are under the impression that the high school will offer only three grades. That is untrue, he said, noting that no students have enrolled for a senior class. It will be added as needed.
