While clinics, tournaments and scrimmages kept some student-athletes tuned up during the offseason, Monday was the first day the Sac-Joaquin Section allowed teams to begin formal spring sports workouts and tryouts.
Baseball, softball, girls soccer, boys tennis, boys golf, swimming and track and field teams compete during the spring season.
Hopes for winning seasons are already high among players and coaches, including Cade Tomasegovich, the varsity girls soccer coach.
“At this time of the season, I look forward to the eagerness of the players to get started,” Tomasegovich said. “There is always a nice buzz around the beginning of the season and a certain anticipation for what we are capable of doing.
“My expectations for the season are high — I hope my players’ are as well.”
Patterson High’s girls soccer teams will open the preseason Feb. 22 at home against Downey High of Modesto.
Benji Lozano returns for his seventh season as the baseball coach after the 2012 Tigers placed third in the Western Athletic Conference and put together the program’s first Division IV playoff run in three years. The team’s first game is Feb. 22 at Hughson High.
The softball program, meanwhile, welcomes back fourth-year coach Jennifer Hamm.
Last year, Patterson finished fifth in the WAC but ended the campaign by winning two consecutive league games, including a 6-1 victory against Pacheco High of Los Banos. The softball squad will open the preseason Feb. 22 with a home game against Hughson.
“I’m very excited to finally be out on the field, and so are the girls,” Hamm said. “We have everybody returning from last year, and a couple of new girls that are coming out as well. I feel we are going to be a contender for WAC this year.”
Seventh-year track and field coach Shellie Freres hopes that her varsity squads can build upon a successful league campaign in 2012.
The boys team finished the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record, while the girls claimed runner-up honors in the WAC, finishing the season at 5-1.
Both track and field squads will hit the ground running March 6 on the road against league rival Livingston High.
First-year coach George Crawford and his boys golf team will begin the preseason with a March 4 match against West High of Tracy at Diablo Grande.
Another rookie coach, Amy Castillo, will lead Patterson’s boys and girls swim teams into competition Feb. 20 against Hilmar High at the Patterson Aquatic Center pool.
Buzzy Wheeland returns for his eighth season as the boys tennis coach. His netters will open their WAC campaign Feb. 25 on the road against Livingston.
