Runners from Patterson High traveled to Elkhorn Golf Course in Stockton on Saturday, Sept. 28, to compete in the Pacific Tiger Invitational cross country meet.

Led by senior Nathan Stanton, Patterson's varsity boys placed sixth out of 13 teams in the small school division.

Stanton followed up his first-place finish in the 10th annual Sierra Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 14 with another top performance at the Pacific Tiger Invitational on Saturday.

Stanton ran the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 57 seconds, to place first out of 106 runners. His teammates were Antonio Venegas (16th, 17:24), Steven Halseth (35th, 18:33), Dylan Halland (45th, 19:02) and Jose Jaramillo (68th, 20:17).

Stanton's winning time was more than 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, averaging 5:09 per mile.

"Nathan really exploded, and he's getting stronger each week," said Patterson coach Joe Aguilar. "As a whole, the varsity runners are starting to close the gaps and run more consistent."

Patterson's varsity girls placed seventh out of 11 teams in the small schools division.

Junior Lupe Ventura was the Tigers lead runner. She placed fifth out of 98 runners with a time of 20:11 on the 3.1-mile course. Also contributing to the Patterson score were Brenda Vargas (39th, 23:06), Jenevy Esqueda (48th, 23:30), Alejandra Carrasco (55th, 23:57), Stephanie Esqueda (57th, 24:04) and Carina Sotelo (88th, 26:48).

"Lupe ran really well, as she's starting to get stronger and make her move," Aguilar said.

Patterson’s sophomore boys placed sixth out of 11 schools. Tiger Tomas Virgen placed 12th with a time of 11:52 on the 2-mile course. Also on the Patterson team were Sean Hicks (31st, 12:32), Carlos Ponce (37th, 12:57), Arturo Navarro (58th, 13:44) and Daniel Isquierdo (59th, 13:45).

Patterson's sophomore girls did not have enough runners for a team score, however, Sabrina Gonzalez placed 18th (15:22) on the 2-mile course. The Tigers other runners also included Lanaeya Banks (23rd, 15:48), Michelle Martinez (30th, 16:28) and Carla Cordero (51st, 20:25).

Patterson will continue its season at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, when it hosts Pacheco High of Los Banos.
