Tigers drop dual meet with Los Banos

Many members of Patterson High’s varsity track and field teams continue to record personal-best finishes, but the teams still lost their Western Athletic Conference dual meet at Los Banos High on March 20.

The Patterson boys dropped a 68-56 decision, while the girls team lost 59-46.

Despite the loss, the boys (0-2 WAC) racked up eight first-place finishes.

Chase Guenther took first in both the 100- and 200-meter races, and Ivan Barbontin won the 110-meter hurdles.

Nathan Stanton led the field in both the 1,600 and the 3,200.

Other individual victories were earned by Nick Russell, discus, and Lourinzo Mixon, long jump.

Winning the 4x100-meter relay were Sean Cosina, Guenther, Barbontin and Mixon.

The Tiger girls (0-2) benefited from victories by Ariyanna Cashen in the triple jump and Megan McWilliams in the long jump and pole vault.

Field event victories were also earned by Irie Ama in the shot put and discus and Jaliyah Anderson in the high jump.

The Tigers continue the WAC season at home at 3:30 p.m. April 10 against Livingston High and Central Catholic High of Modesto.



Junior varsity

The Patterson High JV track and field teams lost their perfect league records March 20, falling to 1-1 in the WAC with losses to Los Banos.

The JV boys team fell to Los Banos 81-51.

The girls gave up a 41-12 decision to the hosts.

No one bested the Patterson boys 4x100 relay team of Joseph Velasco, Kosi Ogbuli, Kahlan Spears and Hunter Powers. The foursome ran away with first place in the event.

Patterson’s Sean Hicks, Velasco, Ogbuli and Powers also came away with a top finish in the boys 4x400 relay.

Individually, Powers took first place in the shot put and discus.

Cameron Tracy of Patterson was first in the 400, while teammate Dalton Schaa placed first in the pole vault.

Ruth Haro sprinted to a first-place finish for Patterson in the girls 200.



Stanislaus County vs. Merced County Clash

Nine local athletes represented Patterson High on Friday, March 22, at the Stanislaus County vs. Merced County Clash at Turlock High School.

The top eight competitors in 16 events qualified for the event during the March 8 Stanislaus County Meet.

Stanton placed second Friday in the boys 3,200-meter race, crossing the finish line in 9 minutes, 57.32 seconds.

Cosina, Barbontin, Guenther and Powers teamed up for a fifth-place finish in the boys 4x100-meter relay, combining for a time of 45.03 seconds.

On the girls side, Anderson gave Patterson a sixth-place finish in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches). She placed eighth in the long jump (14-8.75).

Ama placed fourth in the girls shot put with a throw of 31-10.

McWilliams took second in the girls pole vault (9 feet).
