Tigers lose two, win one at rain-shortened tourney

For the second consecutive spring, the Hilmar High Jim Cantrell Memorial Tournament was shortened by wet weather, but not before the Patterson High varsity baseball team played a trio of games.

In the April 3 tournament opener, Hilmar rallied for two runs in the seventh inning for a 3-2 victory over Patterson (3-11, 1-3 Western Athletic Conference).

The Tigers edged Gustine High 4-3 on Friday, April 5, and closed the tournament with a 4-3 loss to Sutter Union High on Saturday, April 6.

Tournament games scheduled for Thursday, April 4, were canceled due to rain.

Patterson junior Jake Thompson got the start against the Yellowjackets from Hilmar (7-8, 2-2 Trans-Valley League). The left-hander gave up three earned runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.

At the plate, Patterson junior Trevor Troxler went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In the second game against the Gustine Redskins (7-9, 5-1 Southern League), Patterson senior Joey Lopes got the win, striking out seven and giving up four hits in seven innings.

Junior T.J. Jack went 3-for-3 at the plate, and Thompson added a pair of hits and drove in one run.

In the finale against the Sutter Union Huskies (15-3, 3-0 Butte View League), Troxler went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Patterson, and junior Jacob Gomez went 2-for-4.

Patterson High continues the nonleague season at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 11, with a home game against Beyer High of Modesto (7-10-1, 3-1 Modesto Metro League).

Patterson 11, Ripon 7

Junior Andrew Basaldua and senior Kainoa Garza each had two hits to lead the Tigers to a nonleague victory over the Ripon High Indians (7-7, 0-2 TVL) on Monday, April 8.

Thompson earned the win on the hill, allowing three hits while striking out a season-high eight batters in five innings for Patterson.



Junior varsity

In the JV division, Patterson handed Gustine a 3-0 loss to win the third-place game of the Jim Cantrell Memorial Tournament on Saturday, April 6, at Hilmar High.

Thomas Turner went the distance for Patterson (6-7, 2-2) in the finale, giving up just one hit and striking out 10 batters.

Travis Lockhart went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Tigers, while Kevin Phelps was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Patterson used a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning April 3 to cap a 4-3 win over Hilmar in the opening game of the tournament.

Turner and Paul Maese each had a pair of hits.

On Friday, Los Banos High defeated Patterson 7-5. Phelps was 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while Jared Nothstein went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs.
