Tigers' inexperience hurts in back-to-back losses

The Patterson High boys tennis team recorded its second consecutive loss after falling to Central Valley High, 8-1, on March 5 in Ceres.

The loss dropped Patterson to 0-2 in Western Athletic Conference play. Coach Buzzy Wheeland said the Tigers will have to overcome their inexperience in order to be competitive in the league.

At No. 5 singles, the Tigers gained a 6-4, 6-3 win, with Damarrio Hammonds of Patterson defeating Brandyn Weis of Central Valley.

But the Tigers didn't find any more luck in the match against the Hawks.

Central Valley's Alexis Zigala bested Patterson's Francisco Lagarde, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles.

Teammate Edgar Castillo followed with a three-set win over Tiger Dylan Halland, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.

Alexis Villa of Central Valley earned a No. 3 singles victory over Daniel Cota of Patterson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Eric Morales of Central Valley tallied a No. 4 singles win over Matt Valverde in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Gerardo Rivas added a straight-set triumph over Patterson's Chris Carlson, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.

Central Valley's No. 1 doubles team, Ruben Morales and Nimrit Chalal, defeated Daniel Valverde and Toby Silva 6-1, 6-1. Jorge Bustos and Navjot Kanck, the No. 2 pair, added another Hawks' win (6-0, 6-2) over Blake Chastain and Brian Recinos.

Central Valley got its final match victory in the No. 3 doubles competition, as Julio Pena and Osvaldo Sanchez won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Eddie Ramirez and Carlos Ortega.

The Tigers loss came on the heels of a 7-2 home setback against Livingston High on March 3.

Cota beat Jaime Merino 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Hammonds followed with a straight-set win over Emmanuel Jiminez at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

At No. 1 singles, the Wolves gained a 6-1, 6-0 win, with Jacob Mercado of Livingston defeating Lagarde of Patterson.

Alex Mercado earned a No. 2 singles victory over Halland of Patterson in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6.

In the No. 3 singles spot, Sal Cortes defeated Patterson's Matt Valverde in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Homero Gervin outplayed his opponent in the No. 4 singles match, winning 6-2, 6-1 against Carlson.

Diego Jiminez and Sam Redmon added a 7-5, 6-1 win against Daniel Valverde and Silva in the No. 1 doubles spot.

Angel Ramirez and Enrique Medina were winners at No. 2 doubles, topping Chastain and Recinos 6-4, 6-0.

Livingston duo Kevin Castro and Alejandro Aguilar took the No. 3 doubles match, dispatching Ramirez and Ortega 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
