Two locals enter almond industry program

Daniel Bays of Westley and Samantha Perez of Patterson are among 16 individuals who have been chosen as participants in the 2013 Almond Leadership Program, hosted by the Almond Board of California.

Bays, 26, of Westley-based Bays Ranches, graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, in 2011 with a degree in ag engineering. He was a valedictorian of the Patterson High School Class of 2005.

Bays applied for the almond program to learn about the almond board and the industry, as almonds are among the crops his family grows.

Perez, 27, of Innovative Sales Inc. in Modesto, is a 2004 graduate of Central Catholic High School in Modesto. She graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, in 2008 with a degree in ag business and a concentration in marketing.

Perez hopes to contribute to the almond industry and broaden her knowledge.

Almond Leadership Program participants attend monthly seminars covering various topics, including almond marketing, research, scientific affairs, sustainability, production and environmental issues. The seminars are usually held at the Almond Board headquarters in Modesto, while some are conducted at area ranches and the University of California Cooperative Extension office in Modesto.
