Richard Nakamura, CEO of the Del Puerto Healthcare District, said it was a staggering revelation, but could not understand what the purpose of the attack was about.
“We don’t understand why people would be attacking us,” said Nakamura Tuesday afternoon. “We are disappointed that people are targeting [Patterson District Ambulance]. Our only intention is to help people. It does not make sense.”
In an attempt to thwart the attacker’s motives, Nakamura said the district hired a security guard immediately after the incident. The following evening, Monday, Feb. 17, the guard was attacked at 10:30 p.m. by either the same or different vandal.
Nakamura said the guard was sitting in his car when a young man in his 20s approached and started throwing rocks at the guard’s car, even though the individual knew he was being watched. The car received a series of dents and a broken mirror in the process.
The District filed a Sheriff’s report that evening and noted that the vandal was roughly 6 feet tall and 150 pounds. The young male was also wearing a dark stocking cap, white long sleeve shirt and dark pants, said Nakamura.
Additionally, in an incident that police are unsure is related, someone threw a rock into the windshield of Patterson Fire Truck No. 2 near the corner of Sperry Avenue and Third Street around 9 p.m. Jan. 14. That person was described as a man in his early 20s, measuring in at roughly 5 feet 10 inches and 150 pounds. The similar descriptions suggest the vandal may be the same person, as both have targeted community service vehicles.
Nakamura said they will increase their security measures and intend to install more lights, cameras and a perimeter fence in the near future. As of now, Nakamura said he is hiring two guards to look over the facility for the time being.
“We are taking every precaution necessary to protect our staff,” said Nakamura. “We’ve never had a problem like this before, and we hope we’ll never have to deal with a problem like this again.”
