A Vernalis man was killed early Friday, April 5, in a rural Tracy automobile crash with a tractor-trailer that had backed across the road into his path, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Juan De La Torre IV, 23, died at about 4:40 a.m. at South Kasson and Wright roads, where the green 2001 Ford Taurus he was driving hit the side of the trailer and went underneath it, according to CHP officer Adam Shelton.

Shelton said the roof of the Taurus collapsed and De La Torre died of crash-related injuries at the scene.

The driver of the 2012 Volvo tractor-trailer — Edward Greer Jr., 43, of New Brighton, Penn. — was not injured.

De La Torre was driving north on Kasson when the tractor-trailer, owned by Swift Transportation, stopped heading to the south and backed eastward onto Wright Road, blocking both the northbound and southbound lanes of Kasson Road, Shelton said.

He said it was unclear from the CHP’s preliminary accident report why Greer put the semi-truck in reverse.

De La Torre was wearing a seat belt, Shelton said, and there was no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Shelton said the accident was under investigation and the CHP had not determined as of Monday, April 8 who was at fault.

De La Torre worked at Barbosa Cabinets in Tracy and was traveling to work when he was killed, according to Sandra Gil Gonzalez, his aunt.

He leaves behind a young son and daughter, she said. She described De La Torre as a family-oriented man and said he was making plans to marry his girlfriend.
