With a shorthanded roster of wrestlers this past weekend at the McNair High School Invitational in Stockton, a tournament featuring more than 25 regional programs, Patterson High showed strength doesn't always come in numbers.

Despite having just 10 wrestlers in attendance, the Tigers had their fair share of successes. Five Patterson wrestlers placed in the top seven in their weight classes at the competition on Saturday, Dec. 7.

"I was proud of everyone who competed at the tournament," said Patterson coach Virgil Canseco. "We will take away what we have to work on, and get better from there."

Patterson's Daniel Cota (138 pounds) finished second in his weight class, while teammate Tony Halcon (132) finished fourth in his weight bracket.

Tigers Adrian Luna (106) and Francisco Plasencia (195) each placed sixth, and Simon Perez (170) took seventh.

Despite missing several of their senior athletes due to academic commitments, the younger Patterson grapplers got a good dose of experience, according to Canseco.

"I'm especially proud of Nick Molineri (126), Keith Gordon (145), Simon Perez and Michael Boschi (160) for taking the challenge to compete," Canseco said. "You learn more sometimes from losing than winning, and they all competed hard."

The season continues at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, as Patterson travels to Oakdale for the James Riddle Invitational.
