The Patterson Ravens junior varsity youth football team came up short in a hard-fought, 14-8, loss against the host Ripon Knights on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The game was tied at 8-8 with 4 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, before the Knights’ defense capitalized on a Patterson turnover, returning an interception for a go-ahead touchdown.

“Our kids were resilient, and never gave up,” Patterson coach Read Weinzheimer said. “We weathered through everything that Ripon threw at us.”

Nehemiah Shelton also had a key interception late in the contest to keep Patterson’s hopes alive. But the Ravens’ offense sputtered behind a stout Ripon defense.

“We tried to ground and pound (the ball), and do it with three yards and a cloud of dust,” Weinzheimer said. “It just wasn’t enough, as it turned out.”

A 28-yard pass from Kevin Todd to Killion Rosko set up the Ravens’ only score. Toby Silva finished the scoring drive three plays later, with a 1-yard touchdown push.

“We have three games left in the regular season,” Weinzheimer said. “We need to win out if we don’t want to put our destiny in someone else’s hands.”

The novice Ravens didn’t leave completely empty-handed after a 32-13 defeat by the Knights, according to coach John Guevarra.

“Our team really fought well,” Guevarra said. “We stood in the trenches with Ripon, and kept on digging in.”

Patterson’s Marcos Rios made a leaping interception and a weaving 30-yard return for a touchdown. Teammate Elijah Lawson added a kick return for a 70-yard TD.

“Give them credit, they did their homework on us,” Guevarra said.

Linebackers Kane Rosko and Jameel Mustafa also garnered praise their coach.

“These were two players who performed well on the defensive side of the ball,” Guevarra said.

Results for other Ravens teams were not submitted by press time.
