Patterson’s best spellers took home medals for their participation in the Stanislaus County Elementary Schools Championship Spelling Bee on Nov. 2 at Gregori High School in Modesto.

Students who competed in two rounds of competition earned a gold medal, while students who took part in one round of spelling the tough words earned a silver medal.

Patterson Joint Unified School District students have been practicing spelling under the guidance of teacher Michelle Porterfield for the past few months, and although they competed individually, they practiced as a team under the name Patterson’s Buzzing Bees. Students at Sacred Heart Catholic School studied at home with family and with teacher Patricia Neky.

Sixth-grader Ushuaya Castillo and fifth-grader Salvador Ruiz, both students at Walnut Grove School, and fifth-grader Ivan Do of Apricot Valley Elementary School all earned gold medals, as did Sacred Heart sixth-grader Cole Romero.

Silver medals went to Tyler Posey, an Apricot Valley fifth-grader; Shane Striker, a fifth-grader at Las Palmas Elementary School; and Angelo Raffo, a Sacred Heart sixth-grader.

Bryan Lopez, a Grayson Charter School fifth-grader, was an alternate.
