City getting ahead of itself

EDITOR,

The city manager has requested the addition of staff to the tune of more than $100,000 from the general fund. Supposedly, the rest of the $300,000 for new staff positions will come from other departments. Where is the funding for the city’s portion coming from? If this is in anticipation of revenue coming from Walmart and from “Project X,” I question the budgeting sense of city staff. The plan to add bodies to the staff is worse than “counting your chickens before they’re hatched” — the eggs haven’t even been laid yet.

Anyone stopping by the Walmart site can see that there is nothing — I repeat, nothing — going on over there. There has not been a piece of heavy equipment there for more than a week. This may be simply a delay for construction issues, but it’s a delay nevertheless, and therefore the revenue will be equally delayed. Project X so far seems like a cruel joke on the citizens of Patterson. Until there is money in hand, I question spending it on additional staff. When it does begin to come in, it seems spending it for increased law enforcement and fire protection sure would benefit the citizens of Patterson better.

Mary Clemmer, Patterson
