A group of local martial artists traveled to San Jose in February to compete in the Ernie Reyes World Martial Arts Association Tournament.

The karate tournament gave participants an opportunity to display and improve their skills in a competitive environment.

Under the direction of Master Instructor Rob Kitajima, students from Patterson’s West Coast World Martial Arts Academy fared well at the Feb. 25 event.

The competition was hosted by Lynbrook High School and attracted competitors from all over the region.

The local school sent students ranging in age from 5 years old to adults.

First-place trophies at the regional event were awarded to Patterson competitors Salmon Obeid (sparring), Amber Teodosio (forms) and Tanner Davies (forms).

Earning second-place honors were Zach Obeid (sparring), Andrew Freitas (sparring), Chris Apostel (forms and sparring) and Daniel Apostal (forms).

Third-place finishers included Brandon Ou (sparring).

The contingent also earned several medals at the tournament, including participants Nicholas Alvarez, Dave Charette, Cheyenne Charette, Sean Benevedes, Arianna Csech, Madison Li, Emilio Ponce and Jenna Zacher.
