Tiger junior Sterling Ramirez placed second in boys singles to earn a berth into the divisional event today, May 3, at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.
Division tournament results were not available at press time.
As the No. 2 seed at last week’s WAC tournament, Ramirez faced familiar league opponents.
After cruising through his first-round match against Central Valley High of Ceres’ Alexis Villa, 6-1, 6-0, Ramirez dispatched Chase Harden of Ceres High in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Ramirez again reeled off back-to-back sets to take the semifinal match against Los Banos High’s Cory Purser, 6-4, 6-2, and earned a spot in the finals opposite Julio Ochoa of Ceres.
The Tiger stalwart ended the league event with a 0-6, 6-2, 5-7 loss to Ochoa, who was the No. 1 seed. The tournament’s top two players earned bids to sections.
Patterson’s John Minton and James Shugan enjoyed a first-round win over Central Catholic High of Modesto’s John Stockman and Brian Andrews in doubles action, 6-3, 6-2.
Minton and Shugan then made short work of the Ceres duo of Victor Pimentel and Harden, flattening their opponents 6-1, 6-0.
Still, Livingston High’s Cruz Trenado and Jacob Mercado proved too much in the semifinal match, defeating Minton and Shugan in straight sets, 5-7, 4-6.
