The Waterford Diablos found out the hard way there was not much they could do at the plate Sunday, May 6, against the Patterson Jays adult baseball team.

Tyler Bettencourt fired a complete-game, five-hit victory atop the mound, and teammate Keith Yamamoto tallied three hits and drove in a run as Patterson knocked off Waterford, 4-1, at Downey High in Modesto.

Bettencourt struck out three batters as he picked up the win for the Jays (3-1) against the North division’s fifth-place Diablos (2-2) in the Mexican-American Baseball League. This is the Jays second season as a team.

Patterson, which had three players drive in runs, got seven hits in all. A.J. Marroquin went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Rafa Arroyo went 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI in the win.

Zach Wheeland had a double and scored a run for the Jays.

The Jays play again at 10 a.m. May 20 against North Division rival Salida Mariners (3-1) at Patterson High.
