The new Miss Apricot is Correna Bravo. First and second runners-up were Keri Wallace and Cindy Heredia, and Karen Acevedo was named Miss Congeniality.
The Lions Club served more than 2,400 plates of barbecued chicken (4,200 pounds) as attendees strolled the Apricot Fiesta under perfect weather conditions.
With an entry titled Pop-Cot Crunch, 10-year-old Lisa Worley won the sweepstakes award and $50 in the fiesta’s recipe contest.
Longtime West Side resident Lucile Filippini died late Wednesday afternoon in a Modesto hospital. She was 91.
A state employee alone in his parked car on Del Puerto Canyon Road about 300 yards west of Interstate 5 was shot several times with a shotgun in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. His body was found shortly after 5 a.m. by a passing driver.

Pattersonites and former students from around the area will gather Sunday afternoon in the park to honor Edna Keechler Stewart, who is retiring after 34 years of teaching local elementary classes. A total of 1,401 youngsters have passed through her classes. Chairing the event are two former students, Clara Brunoni Johnson and Doris Brunoni Martin.
Despite a late-afternoon shower, the first Patterson Art Festival drew a good crowd last weekend. Three local artists, Alice Roberts, Delwyn Pezzoni and Edith Logan, were awarded first-place ribbons. The shower was the first rainfall in more than two months.
Fifty seniors will graduate next week at Patterson Union High School. Eighth-grade graduates will number 89 at Las Palmas, 24 at Grayson and eight at Rising Sun.

The Chamber of Commerce is making plans to sponsor a big Fourth of July celebration along the banks of the San Joaquin River, complete with a free barbecue, an orchestra and a stage for dancing, a baseball game and many activities throughout the day. It will be Patterson’s first big celebration.
Property buyers and new Patterson residents have arrived this week from Tennessee, Nebraska, Los Angeles, Crescent City and Fresno.
E.R. Leedy, of the contracting firm of Leedy & Reppert, has been appointed deputy sheriff for the Patterson area.
