The Modesto Garden Club awarded eight $1,500 scholarships in June to applicants who reside or go to school in Stanislaus County.

One of the scholarships was awarded to Patterson resident Jessica Sheetz, who completed her studies at Modesto Junior College in April. She will enroll at a four-year college this fall, majoring in environmental horticulture and soil science.

The Modesto Garden Club hosts an annual garden club tour to support many projects, including scholarships.

The club, founded in 1924, has more than 500 members and contributes to beautification projects, therapeutic gardening and children’s gardening. Its first community project was landscaping the newly built Modesto Junior College campus on College Avenue.
