A weight-loss contest will kick off the fourth anniversary of the Westside Healthcare Advisory Taskforce’s healthy lifestyle education campaign Aug. 23 with a “Biggest Loser”-style weigh-in.

Teams of 10 people seeking to lose weight by eating better and exercising more can register for the contest until Friday, Aug. 17.

The task force, which includes representatives of health care boards and medical offices who seek to improve health care offerings on the West Side, has been working on healthy lifestyle education for the past four years through Healthier Choices for Our West Side. The goal of the campaign is to encourage people to make better, more healthful choices about food and add exercise to everyday life.

Participants in the West Side Healthy Lifestyle contest will strive to lose pounds in the next few months by eating well and exercising more often. The challenge promotes friendly competition among local organizations and businesses and motivates people to form healthy lifestyle habits, organizers say.

Preregistered 10-member teams will officially weigh in from 11:30 to noon Aug. 23 at the West Side Theatre, 1331 Main St., in Newman.

Team members and invited guests will gather for a lunch catered by Blues Café of Patterson at the theater following the weigh-in. Dr. David Hilburn, the medical director of Del Puerto Health Center in Patterson, will be the keynote speaker, offering listeners “The Skinny on Obesity.” His talk will focus on the relationship between excess weight and diabetes.

Other speakers will include Stanislaus County District 5 Supervisor Jim DeMartini, Newman Mayor Ed Katen, Patterson Mayor Luis Molina and Gustine Mayor Dennis Brazil.

After the kickoff, teams will continue to weigh themselves weekly. The team that loses the most weight collectively as of an Oct.18 weigh-out at the Westside Theatre will be declared the winner of the contest.

Each team will be weighed as a group. If a team does not have all 10 members in attendance, it will be penalized 10 pounds.

Deadline to register a team is Friday. Team rosters must identify a team captain and include a letter of intent to participate and should be sent to Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors, Attn: Jim DeMartini, 1010 10th St., Ste. 6500, Modesto, CA 95354.

For information: Jim DeMartini, Stanislaus County supervisor, 525-4470.
