The Patterson High volleyball team dropped a pair of nonleague matches last week to Merced’s Golden Valley High and Summerville High of Tuolumne.

On Sept. 5, Patterson (2-6) lost to Summerville, 25-9, 25-15, 25-8, on the road.

Mele Tupouata contributed eight kills and four blocks in the loss, and teammate Bailey Boschi had four aces and four assists. Patterson’s Karina Villafana tallied 15 digs.

Patterson head coach Tarah High welcomed the experience as an opportunity to see her athletes showcase their teamwork and evaluate how they can improve.

“We are starting to play as a more cohesive unit, while also getting stronger on both offense and defense,” she said.

The Tigers witnessed the value of club volleyball experience Sept. 4, when Golden Valley, bolstered by travel team talent, completed a three-game sweep, 25-12, 25-14, 25-13.

High described that game as a step forward for her players.

“We played well against this top-tier team,” she said. “We learned a lot about how the game should really look.”

Kiara Job led Patterson with two kills and three digs, and Samantha Camacho had four digs in the back row. Maria Corez added one kill, two assists and two digs for the Tigers.
