The Patterson High girls golf team won its Western Athletic Conference opener but lost two league matches on consecutive days last week to begin the season 1-2.

The team will play its next WAC match at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Forebay Golf Course. Pacheco High of Los Banos is the host team.

Results of a home match Tuesday, Sept. 11, against Central Catholic of Modesto will appear in the Sept. 21 Irrigator.

Ceres 160, Patterson 177

The Tigers dropped a decision to the Ceres High Bulldogs on Thursday, Sept. 6.

Patterson coach Jason Oliveira attributed the loss on Thursday, Sept. 6., to the number of skilled players on the Bulldogs’ roster.

“We held our own, but (Ceres’) depth of lineup was too much for us to overcome,” Oliveira said.

Sarah Sanchez led Patterson with a score of 38 on the par-27 River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres. Veronica Benitez (42), Dayna Hansen (47) and Simone Grice (50) rounded out Patterson’s team.

“We will continue to work hard and improve, hoping to finish the first half strong,” Oliveira said.

Central Valley 175, Patterson 177

Patterson narrowly lost to Central Valley High of Ceres on Sept. 5 at St. Stanislaus Golf Course in Modesto.

“We gave some shots away on the small course that we would love to have back,” Oliveira said. “Still, all in all, the girls performed well.”

The Tigers’ best golfer that afternoon was Sanchez, who recorded a 38 on the par-27 course for medalist honors. Patterson’s other golfers were Benitez (40), Hansen (45) and Grice (54).

“I am very happy with how the girls are approaching each match — focusing on the golf course, as opposed to what the other team is doing,” Oliveira said. “Our goal each time out is to take what the course gives us, stay out of trouble and put ourselves in position to two-putt or less.”

Patterson 202, Los Banos 212

Three Patterson High golfers shot rounds of 52 or better, including two in the 40s, during the Tigers’ win over Los Banos High in their first league match Sept. 4.

“We played our best golf of the season so far (against Los Banos),” Oliveira said.

Leading the Tigers’ charge was Benitez, the medalist, who shot a 48, as well as her teammates Sanchez (49) and Hansen (52). Grice carded a 63 for Patterson.

“Veronica had a solid round, avoiding trouble for the most part, and was very consistent on and around the greens,” Oliveira said.
