Nathan Stanton set the pace for Patterson with a first-place finish and a time of 17 minutes, 33 seconds on the 3.1-mile course at T.W. Patterson Sports Complex.
According to coach Dave Klein, two of the team’s fastest runners missed the meet.
“We ran a little shorthanded, which definitely cost the boys a victory,” Klein said. “We were missing both Ben Vega and Tomas Navarro, who were our No. 2 and No. 4 runners leading up to the meet. They will both be back soon, which will definitely help.”
Patterson had five of the top 10 runners in the race against Los Banos, including finishes by Antonio Venegas (third place, 19:13), Julius Flores (seventh, 21:07), Dylan Halland (eighth, 21:14) and Jose Jaramille (10th, 21:50).
Joey Howard’s time of 23:15 was good for 12th place while Christian Barba finished in 24:48, good enough for 14th place.
“We still have some work to do if we want to challenge in league,” Klein said. “We’ll keep practicing as we’ve done all season and hope for the best.”
In the girls varsity meet, Los Banos took eight of the top 10 spots in the 3.1-mile race and claimed a 19-44 victory. Patterson’s Lupe Ventura took second place in 22:01, while teammate Gracie Bradley finished 10th in 27:24.
Patterson’s next runners to cross the line were Stephanie Esqueda (27:55) in 11th place and Jenevy Esqueda (27:59) in 12th place.
In the 2-mile junior varsity boys race, Patterson claimed a 19-39 triumph. Dylan Christiansen paced the team, finishing first in 13:08.
The team also had a strong showing from the rest of its contingent. Devin Burnette was second (13:14), followed by Sean Hicks in third (13:37).
Patterson did not field a complete JV girls team. Maura Gallegos and Janette Guerrero finished the course with individual times of 22:36 and 23:10.
