ATWATER — The Patterson High girls golf team had a top-10 finisher at the Western Athletic Conference Midseason Tournament on its way to a fourth-place team finish on Sept. 19.

The Tigers shot a collective 508 on Rancho Del Rey’s par-72 course, finishing behind third-place Livingston High. Ceres High was second, while Modesto’s Central Catholic High led the field. Team scores were not available.

“Rancho Del Rey is a well-established course with many large trees and small greens,” said Jason Oliveira, coach of the Patterson team. “The course was in very good shape, and our approach going in was to keep the ball in play — nothing out of bounds — and work on two putts or less once we reach the greens.”

Sarah Sanchez led the way for Patterson — she placed seventh with a total of 117 strokes.

Veronica Benitez finished the match with a 122 for Patterson, and Dayna Hansen and Simone Grice fired rounds of 125 and 144, respectively.

“From our team, all of the girls performed very well,” Oliveira said. “(Hansen) has really picked up the game quickly, and she is going to surprise some people in the second half of the season. She hits the ball farther, and at times straighter, than a lot of the girls that have been playing for years.

“(Grice) gives her best effort each time out, and continues to have a positive attitude while working against some of the challenges that all new golfers experience.”

At the midpoint of the campaign, Patterson has a 2-3 WAC record.

“We are looking forward to getting into the second half of league play,” Oliveira said. “We are simply looking to improve daily and compete to the best of our ability. In doing that, if we win along the way, great. If we fall short, giving our best effort is what is most important. If we do that, I can live with the results, regardless of what they are.”

Patterson 208, Pacheco 229

Sanchez also posted an impressive score as the Tigers won their second WAC match Sept. 17.

Sanchez fired a 44 on Gustine’s par-36 Forebay Golf Course to lead Patterson to a 208-229 win against Pacheco High of Los Banos.

“Sarah was the match medalist and paced our squad on a really solid day,” Oliveira said. “She played a steady round, which included two pars and some great play around the greens to save bogey and avoid some big numbers.”

Benitez shot a 51, and Hansen carded a 53 for the Tigers at Gustine. Grice finished with a 60.
