The Patterson High volleyball team bested visiting Central Valley High of Ceres, 3-2, on Sept. 19 to record its first Western Athletic Conference victory of the season.

The Tigers prevailed by scores of 7-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 15-8.

Patterson coach Tarah High said the result would be a boost for her players.

“This win definitely gave the team some confidence,” High said. “The players have the skills, and they continue to work hard at practice. But sometimes it takes a win to see how that potential can translate on the court.”

Mele Tupouata led the Tigers in victory with six kills and five blocks. Kiara Job had five kills and three blocks. Lucero Vargas and Mariele Schut each added four kills.

“We were really challenging (Central Valley) at the net,” High said. “Our passing was also much better (than in previous matches).”

Bailey Boschi, Samantha Camacho and Schut each tallied four aces for Patterson. Karina Villafana collected 17 digs and Camacho added 10 digs.

The team was unable to repeat that success, though, during a home tilt Monday, Sept. 24, that saw Patterson fall in three sets to Los Banos High.

The visitors outscored the Tigers 25-11, 25-8, 25-17.

“The level of competition was much higher,” High said. “We were not at our best, and it takes a positive attitude to stay competitive with a talented opponent.”

Tupouata paced the Tigers in the loss with four kills. Villafana had 13 digs for Patterson (1-2 WAC), Maria Cortez added 10 digs and Boschi notched five assists.

“We are at our best when we play with confidence,” High said. “If you put in a full effort, you’re going to get good results.”

Patterson (3-0) also won its league match Monday, defeating Los Banos High in three sets, 25-15, 23-25, 17-15.

Julia Sill had a game-high seven aces for the Tigers. Lindsey added three kills, and Brianna Palafox had a dig.
