On Sept. 14, 2012, his mother, Lori Hay of Patterson, and grandfather, Lloyd Eckler of Mountain Ranch, pinned his anchors as he became chief petty officer. The pinning ceremony was at the Navy Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C.
Katen reported to Navy boot camp in Great Lakes, Ill., in November 2004 and then attended two years of Navy nuclear training. That training included Nuclear A School and Nuclear Power School in Goose Creek and Nuclear Prototype in Ballston Spa, NY.
Katen then spent five and a half years aboard the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier based in San Diego, with four overseas deployments. He served as an electrical technician and operator for the 8MW electric plant, which has two nuclear reactors and is capable of powering a small city.
He was transferred in November to Goose Creek, where he is an instructor at the Navy’s Nuclear A School.
