Deputies are searching for two inmates who escaped from the Stanislaus County Honor Farm on Monday evening, Oct. 15, after they climbed a fence on the south side of the minimum-security jail facility east of Grayson.

Marco Antonio Maciel, 23, of Stockton and Tomas Arreola Cornejo, 34, of Delhi are both wanted on suspicion of escaping from a jail facility.

The two men were last seen at the honor farm, 8224 W. Grayson Road, in rural Modesto, at 6 p.m. Monday and were found missing at 6:30 p.m. when deputies conducted an inmate count.

Maciel was in custody on suspicion of marijuana cultivation and possession of a concealed firearm. Cornejo was in custody on suspicion of possession of narcotics for sale and marijuana cultivation. Both men are in the U.S. illegally and had federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement holds in place until a judge decides on their criminal cases, according to Sgt. Anthony Bejaran of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

The two escapees were housed at the honor farm because of inadequate bed space in the higher security local jail in downtown Modesto, Bejaran stated in a release.

The county is building a new 192-bed facility, slated to open in September 2013, to replace beds lost to a fire at the honor farm in 2010. Once completed, the honor farm will close. The new facility will help house inmates who need to be placed in a more secure facility and will provide much-needed bed and programming space, according to Bejaran.

Anyone with information about this investigation can call the sheriff’s department at 525-7114. People can also leave an anonymous tip by calling Crime Stoppers at 521-4636; email tips at www.modestopolice.com/CrimeStoppers, or text them to CRIMES (274637) by typing “Tip704” plus the message and be eligible for a cash reward.
