EDITOR,

Here’s a bit of Patterson High sports trivia.

The PHS Tigers fell to Los Banos last Friday evening, Oct. 12, in a game played on the local field.

Exactly 50 years ago to the day, Los Banos went home with a 26-0 victory, the loss keeping Patterson from the Trans-Valley League title.

The 1962 Tigers went on to post an excellent 8-1 record. Until meeting Los Banos, the locals had outscored their opponents 117-0 in their first four games.

Fred Stone was in his first year of coaching in Patterson that fall, and he had some outstanding players. With Mark Pepple at quarterback handing off to brothers Rick and Mike Germolos, as well as Jerry Hayton, the Tigers used a punishing offense all season. Shoring up the defense were Roy Hall and Bobby Zavala.

In the final game of the season, Los Banos used its exceptional speed to trounce Hughson 86-0, scoring 45 points in the final quarter alone. That raised quite a stink among area coaches, and the next year Patterson chose to play an independent football schedule and bypass the TVL.
