“I’m getting to know the community,” Cardenas said Monday, Oct. 22. “I did a little research before coming here. I feel like that everything I’ve done prepares me for coming to Patterson.”
Cardenas, the new branch manager and head librarian, comes to Patterson from the Modesto library, with experience in both reference services and the children’s department.
She follows Kelly Ferrini, who transferred to the Turlock library and is the new regional children’s librarian.
Ferrini, the librarian and branch manager in Patterson from 2007 to 2010, worked a year in Newman and then returned here in summer 2011, working 15 months at the local branch.
Cardenas has worked in the Stanislaus County Library system, based in Modesto, since 2002. She ran children’s story times during her first eight years in library work.
This past year, Cardenas spent time in the Modesto library’s reference department and coordinated programs for adults on topics including mental health and bullying.
Vanessa Czopek, the Stanislaus county head librarian, said Cardenas would fit in well with the local community.
“Olga is wonderful and will be an asset to the Patterson library,’ Czopek said. “She is enthusiastic and community-oriented. Olga has experience in many areas of the library. She has been the backbone of both children’s and reference department’s outreach efforts. Patterson will soon come to appreciate her many talents.”
Cardenas, who reads, writes and speaks in Spanish and English, wants to start library programs for the Spanish-speaking community in Patterson.
“I’m really, really excited to apply everything I’ve learned to the benefit of this community,” Cardenas said. “I’m really looking forward to working with the schools and building partnerships with the community and presenting programs in partnership with them.”
As head librarian and branch manager, Cardenas is responsible for the library’s book collection. She also checks books in and out and answers library questions as part of her day-to-day activities. She will rotate preschool story time sessions with library assistant Sandie Segoviano. She will also run craft programs and teen game nights and show family movies once a month.
Cardenas earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1995 from California State University, Stanislaus, with a major in business administration and a minor in finance. After working in the business world for a few years, she went back to college and earned her teaching credential from CSU Stanislaus in 1998.
In 2011, Cardenas earned her Master of Library Science and Information Systems degree from San Jose State University .
Cardenas, a native of Mexico, came to Modesto in 1986 and still resides there with her husband, Al Cardenas, and children, Elizabeth, a freshman in high school, and David, a seventh-grader. She enjoys reading, hiking and gardening.
