Patterson High’s varsity volleyball team finished the Western Athletic Conference season with three wins and nine losses, concluding with a 3-1 defeat by the visiting Panthers from Pacheco High on Monday, Oct. 30.

The Los Banos-based school won the game in four sets, 25-16, 25-21, 26-28, 25-16.

“After the match, we talked about having our returning players come to offseason workouts and how we can become a stronger team,” said Patterson coach Tarah High. “We’re still working on the idea of commitment. We need to realize what that means to volleyball.”

The Tigers’ only senior, Karina Villafana, was honored before Monday’s game.

“I’ve seen Karina transition from a freshman to a varsity athlete,” High said. “I love her attitude and her drive. She’s been a huge help and a defensive specialist.”

Villafana led Patterson with 20 digs for the night. She said her teammates kept getting better as the season wore on.

“Next year, the team will have a lot more experience, and that will help them out a lot,” Villafana said. “This season, we were all one team, and once we started to communicate on the court, we were able to see improvements in our game.”

Also contributing for the Tigers on Monday were juniors Mele Tupouata, who made 10 kills and six aces; Kiara Job, with seven kills and eight blocks; and Mariele Schut, with seven kills.

Patterson also had 23 assists from sophomore Bailey Bochi; 16 digs from junior Maria Cortez; and 15 digs from junior Emma Dallimore.

High said all of the players brought enthusiasm to its matches.

“The players have a lot of spirit. That really pushes us through in the games,” she said.

Patterson also participated in Dig Pink Night, an effort to raise awareness and support for breast cancer. Tiger players wore pink socks for the home tilt Monday night against Pacheco, to honor the fight against the disease. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Junior varsity

The JV Tigers (8-4 WAC) beat Pacheco in two sets Monday, 25-22, 25-22.

Brianna Palafox, Kianna Garza and Cassie Santelices led Patterson’s scoring effort with four aces each.

Gabby Maldonado had three blocks and Santelices made three assists for the Tigers.

Freshmen

Patterson’s freshman volleyball team (3-9 WAC) bested Pacheco’s freshmen with scores of 25-22, 24-26, 15-11.
